Brennende Barrikaden in Göttingen

New Orleans revisited
What strucks me most about the pictures we see in television is that I remember the streets which are now flooded. All these places I have visited in January are now deep under water. It´s incredible to imagine that this birght city might be never rebuilt - for sure not the way it was. Together with Sebastian Christ who visited New Orleans this spring as well I published a review on New Orleans today which you can read here. Hopefully they will manage the catastrophe better as during the last days in future!

What´s going on in Europe?
Hello Americans, plan a trip to Europe? Now you can be happy, the EURO exchange rate is dropping since weeks, Europe becomes cheap, since Luxembourg prime minister Jean-Claude Junker said: "Europe is not in crisis. It is deep crisis." Maybe you heard about the European Union troubles during the last week: The people of France and the Netherlands said no (non, nee) to the European Constitution and last week France and the British clashed on the European budget. So yes, Europe is in a crisis, but i would call it a positive crisis. For the very first time the people of Europe said: STOP, not so fast! For the last 50 years Europe merged lead by its leaders without communicating these actions to its people. Now people are upset because they also want to decide what Europe shall look like in future: How many countries should form the EU? Shall it be a big free trade zone or a real political union, United States of Europe - like? The current crisis forces the European leaders to rethink these issues, not behind closed doors in Brussels but in public. The European unification will go on, but with a little positive break to take breath. So I think everybody who fears that the European project could break apart now is very wrong. Most intellectuals and political scientists here point to a delay, but not a fundamentally "no". However the question on integrating more eastern countries, especially Turkey, will cause a hot poblic debate. But come and see yourself until the EURO will win back its strength :-)

Free Ride (Ode an den Sommer)
Last Sunday was sunny. The German "Bummelstudent" is thankful for these conditions, preferably while sitting in a Biergarten. Others make a cruise on Germany´s fine rivers, canooing until they really sweat under the burning sky. Again other take place in little swimming islands, "Schlauchbooten", without any paddle and drift down one of these rivers while doing... nothing. So did we last sunday. Afterwards we were standing at track #2 at Körle regional station (as provincial as it sounds) in our swimmshorts and with a towel - but without a ticket (and it is as forbidden to ride without a ticket in Germany as in every other Western country (except Portugal and Italy)), when the little red regional train truckled into the station. The conductor stepped out and we while we were bording he was just laughing since he hasnt seen such a picture for a very long time (we guess thats we he laughed), anyway he was so amused that he gave us a free ride in exchange for some hints where the best paddling tracks in Nordhessen region are. Obviously he expects more sun next weekend.
